Goal Setting - Why People with Goals in Life Succeed and those without Goals Fail…

Updated: Jun 4, 2021

Why do people with goals in life succeed whilst those without goals, fail? Once you understand the answer, your life will never be the same again. You’ll suddenly find that ‘good luck’ just seems to be attracted to you & the things you want just fall in line.

To put it simply, we become, what we think about… It’s worth repeating: We become what we think about.

Throughout history, wise men, teachers, philosophers & prophets have all disagreed about many things in life, but it’s only on this one point that they’re all in complete & unanimous agreement.

“A man’s life is what his thoughts make of it.” (Marcus Aurelius)

“A man is what he thinks about all day long.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives, by altering their attitude of mind.” (William James)

“If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” (The Bible - Mark 9:23)

In short, if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results in your life. If you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. These are the simple facts which are the basis of an astonishing law of prosperity and success: believe and succeed.

“Our doubts are traitors that make us lose the good we oft’ might win by failing to ‘attempt’…” (William Shakespeare).

Self-doubt or fear is most often the thing that holds us back. We become what we think about. A person who’s thinking about a concrete and worthwhile goal, is going to reach it because that’s what they’re thinking about.

Conversely, a person who has no goal, who doesn’t know where they’re going and whose thoughts are filled with confusion, anxiety, fear or worry, well, they become that person – they become what they think about and live life in frustration. Similarly, a person who thinks about nothing, ultimately becomes nothing.

But why do we become what we think about? Well consider this analogy between the human mind and farmland: a farmer has some land he wants to plant. Now the land doesn’t care what seeds he plants – whatever he plants, the land will yield. It’s up to the farmer to decide what seeds to plant. The human mind is like the land because it too doesn’t care what you plant in it.

So, let’s say the farmer has two seeds, one corn and the other is a poison plant (Deadly Nightshade, or something). The farmer digs two little holes and plants each seed, waters and takes care of them. Invariably, the land will return what’s planted (“as you sow, so shall you reap”). Remember that land doesn’t care. It’ll return poison plants in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So, up come the two plants – one corn, one a poison plant.

The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible & mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn’t care what we plant – success or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal or confusion. Misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. What we plant, it must return to us. The human mind must return what we plant.

So why don’t we pay more attention to our minds? Well maybe it’s because our minds come as standard equipment at birth. It’s free and things that are given to us for nothing, we place little value on. Things that we pay money for, we value. The truth is that exactly the reverse is true.

Everything that is really of value to us, comes to us free. Our minds, our souls, our bodies. Our hopes, dreams, intelligence, our love for family, friends. All these priceless possessions are FREE. But the things that cost us money are actually very cheap and can be replaced. Your expensive trainers, mobile phone or car can be replaced. A wealthy person can lose it all and make another fortune. Even if your house burns down, you can re-build it. But the things you got for nothing, well those things you can never replace.

The human mind isn’t used because we simply take it for granted. It can do any kind of job we assign to it, but generally speaking, we use it for little jobs, instead of big, important ones. Studies have shown that most of us use only 10% or less of our abilities.

So, decide. What is it you want for you. Plant your goal in your mind. It’s the most important decision you’ll ever make in your entire life. All you have to do is plant that seed in your mind, care for it, work steadily towards your goal and it will become your reality.

Think about your goal in a relaxed, positive way. Picture yourself in your mind’s eye as having already achieved this goal. See yourself doing the things that you’ll be doing when you reach your goal.

You are the sum total of your thoughts. You are guided by your mind. What you think today is who you will become tomorrow.
