The First Thing You Need to Do if You Want to Change Your Life is to Believe that it’s Possible

By Antony Akabah

When times are difficult as they are right now, it’s important to remember that no matter what, you still have the ability to make choices in your life, no matter how limited or bleak they may seem. Things might be rubbish right now but, if you know that others are going through the same and yet some, perhaps many, still succeed, well what reason do you have for believing that you too can’t do the same?

It’s not just about ‘Winners and Losers’

One thing to understand is that yes, there are winners and there are losers. But there’s another group: those who have not discovered how to win. All they need is some coaching, some assistance, a little support. All they need is some insight or a different strategy to make some adjustments that will open up the key to a whole new future. That's all that they need. Most of us fall into this group.

What is it you want, what goals, what do you want to change?

Think about something you want for you. Something that's real for you, important for you. Something that will give your life some special meaning and power. The fact that you can ‘visualise’ it, makes it possible… why not? If someone else you know, has made their possibility into a reality, then you can do it too.

Yes, it’s hard…

It’s tough, it’s hard times, but maybe it’s also hard times for everybody else right now, too. So, you have to make the choice to be resilient, take ownership and maintain a level of integrity with yourself, so that even when you face setbacks, it will be a benchmark to keep you in the game, keep you moving forward. Re-adjust your strategy and your plan of action, continuously look for ways to win.

Change your belief system

So, whether it’s a business idea or a new skill or course that you always wanted to do, believe in yourself and say “it's possible”. With power and conviction, say: “it's possible!”. Just say that to yourself every day, “it's possible!”.

Because what does that do? It begins to change your ‘belief system’. It changes what you believe, subconsciously. It changes what you believe you can do. Once you start on this path, you may well find that you end up expanding or even changing your goals or plans completely. That’s a good thing, because you will have learnt new things along the way. You will realise that there’s more to you, more possibilities and that you have more to offer…

Don’t limit yourself to what you’ve already done in your life or what’s happened in your life. Operate out of a larger vision of yourself. See yourself doing what you want to do, experiencing what you want to experience, doing what it is that gives your life some meaning of value. Operate out of your imagination - not your memory.

For example, before April 1954, the common belief, was that we were not physically capable of breaking the four-minute barrier - that we could not run a mile in less than four minutes. That’s what everyone believed because it had never been done, so it simply could not be done.

Then, Roger Bannister came along and he broke the four-minute barrier… Since that time, over 20,000 people have done it, including high school kids! What changed? 20,000 people! What changed?

What happened was that when those people got on the track, they knew it had been done: Roger Bannister did it. That’s it. They knew it had been done and because they knew it had been done, there was now a new belief about this barrier, about this goal that was unreachable. So those 20,000 people got in the race believing, knowing that someone else had done it and that it's possible that they could do it.

Believe that it's possible! Believe that if someone else can make their dream become a reality, then it's possible that you can make your dream become reality. Believe that you can bounce back from adversity and reinvent your life. Believe that it’s possible… and eventually, you too will surely make it so…
